Tax SNAFU
I did a brief internship at SAP Labs during Spring Quarter 2008 while wrapping up my MS thesis. I'm preparing my taxes now, and it seems that they completely screwed up my W-2 forms. They have me paying taxes to CA, NY, and NYC. The "funny" thing is that I lived in California for the totality of my employment period. It would appear that I'm paying taxes to New York that simply should not be paid.
My theory is that since I changed my mailing address toward the end of my internship to a NYC PO Box, their very clever system decided that I lived in NYC and therefore started handling taxes accordingly.
I find some irony that a company that makes business management software managed to set me up paying taxes to a state I neither lived in nor worked in...
Now I just have to figure out how to get this fixed. Too bad taxes are due in two days.

Being on call
There's nothing quite like being about ready to go to bed, logging on 'one last time' to make sure all the systems are happy, just to find out that there's something akin to a potential catastrophic meltdown if things aren't fixed. Then a phone call comes in from Hong Kong making sure I know of the problem. Fortunately the Ninjas (i.e. very experience people) noticed the issue too and also worked to fix it.
Anyhow, three and a half hours later at 3:20am, still awake and working...

Job Search Complete
One of the things that I have neglected to mention in my recent failure to update my blog is that the summer job search ended very happily. The D. E. Shaw Group has hired me to work from June 19th till September 9th. I'm very excited about the whole thing; it looks like it'll be a very fun place to work. Also good for me is that the salary is very nice, and they're paying for my trip to New York and for my housing there. They'll be putting me up in Columbia University housing for the first half of the summer and for the next half apparently I'll have a single in YMCA housing. I haven't yet found out if they'll be providing board in addition to room but I don't think so; in any case I should have a kitchen in both places.
More news as I have it!

Off to New York
I leave today for New York, shuttle at 1:30 and plane at 4 pm. Very exciting and stressful!
Here's a map of where I'm staying and where the office is:
Google maps
Pretty cool, huh? They put me just a block away from the office. No taxis! (One wonders if money saved on taxis offsets money spent on downtown hotel rooms!)
Anyhow, now I have to finish a homework assignment that's due tomorrow, but which I won't be around to drop off!
Wish me luck... I get back on Saturday. I should have Internet access from the hotel, but you never know...

Aurelie's Job Search
In the ongoing job-search story, Aurelie was just accepted at her top choice company: the Boston Consulting Group. She should be working there in San Francisco over the summer.
To give an idea of the odds involved, the entire University is in principle eligible to submit resumes. Then, they select about one hundred for on-campus interviews. Of that, somewhere between 20 to 30 make it to the final round interviews (per office). And finally, each office only accepts about 4 people.
So congratulations to Aurelie! :-) BCG is an extremely prestigious consulting group, so it's a very good place to be for the summer.
I will post news about my own job search shortly. In brief, I am flying to New York this Thursday for my own final round of interviews with the D.E. Shaw group. Here's to hoping that it goes well!
