Blast from the Past: classical music in games
I'm listening to "Jeux d'Eaux" by Ravel and I'm very reminded of music used in one of the Quest for Glory series... I think it was the second one, Trial by Fire; there was the water sorceress person. I wonder if the piece was used as an inspiration for the game's music. I unfortunately don't have the game available to run and find out; does anybody know anything about this?
It wouldn't have been the first time that a classical piece inspired something modern... The Harry Potter theme is almost straight out of Swan Lake, for instance. Several games adapt classical music; it's kind of nifty, actually. Were I in that business, I'd probably find a way to shoehorn the fourth movement of Dvorak's Ninth into a game. :) (that would be the 'New World' symphony)

Cars that go whack
Well, we had an adventure today. Aurelie and I went shopping, had dinner, did all that stuff, and then were in a car accident on the way home. First things first, we're completely fine, and our car also seems to have come out virtually unscathed (there's some damage to the paint, but that's all I can see). But it was a real accident... one of the three cars involved appears to have been totaled. And no, it wasn't my fault...

Return to quasi-normality
Today I had one of the hardest midterms I've ever had: CS229. The class is famous for having average midterm scores in the 30-40% range. So I guess it's not unexpected that I did badly. I still feel pretty darn stupid after the midterm, though.
Well, so ends one of the worst periods of the quarter; from here on, it's back to normal crazy busy, instead of insane crazy busy...

The Brits Welcome the Sith
You just have to see this (first 30 seconds especially). King Abdullah, of Saudi Arabia, arrives in the UK for the first state visit in 20 years. The military band decides to play the Imperial March from Star Wars. You know, Vader's theme song. Tee hee hee. One wonders how many people from King Abdullah's entourage got the reference! (Or for that matter, the Queen's!)
(Apparently, this is real; searching for "abdullah visit vader" reveals several apparently independent reports of the incident.)
