The Google Strikes Back

category: General
There are certainly advantages to having a professor who works at Google. Last Tuesday (May 17th) we get an email from the prof offering free tickets to Star Wars! Google had booked the entire theater room. But since it was for an 11 pm showing on a Thursday, the only people crazy enough to go were the interns. So they had some 150 tickets left over. Our prof handed out tickets to the class for free and even let people have two or three (for friends etc.)

So Aurelie and I turned to the Dark Side (along with a lot of other students from the class) and watched Episode III. (It's a funny feeling to think that we're done with Star Wars.) As predicted the vast majority of people at the showing were more or less college-aged.

In any case, the movie was very, very good. Better than Episode II and simply light years ahead of Episode I. I won't give any spoilers just yet except for one: Anakin turns into Darth Vader...... :-) Oh, and a welcome spoiler: while Jar Jar does make two token appearances in the movie, he doesn't say a thing!

At some point in the future I'll write some thoughts about the movie. I'll wait for a few weeks a) because it's final projects/exams time! and b) so that people have a chance to see the movie.

Oh, and of course, we had to go see it again, so off goed we on Saturday, again to the 11 pm showing. This time, we actually had to pay. Bah! Got great seats both times, though...

As a final word of parting, I really liked the following: Obiwan, about to go searching for the bad guys, turns to Anakin and says something like: "Oh, these things usually turn into wild bantha chases!" Lucas has a knack for taking present-day vernacular and rendering it quite well in StarWarsy style. Jedi poodoo! Jabba will turn you into bantha fodder, you scruffy nerf-herder. ^ TOP

Hurray for Honors

category: School
I’m very pleased to announce that I’ve been accepted into Stanford’s Computer Science Honors Program. It was an ‘interesting’ application process: the professor I was originally supposed to do it with disappeared on me. After sending him four emails without receiving a response – especially when the fourth was two weeks before the deadline – I started getting a little worried. I went to my academic advisor, Prof. Maggie Johnson, to figure out what to do. She was kind enough to help me find a new professor. Read More → ^ TOP
