Pilonidal Parties

category: General
Well, I’ve run into one of the oddest medical conditions ever. Starting on Tuesday the 8th, there was some swelling just below the small of the back. It was hurting and gradually hurt and swelled more and more; neither Aurelie nor I knew what it was. And then on Thursday evening, thinking it was a bunched up muscle I was stretching the skin, suddenly something must have cracked and a whole bunch of liquid came out. Yuck!

So goes I to the doctor on Friday to find out what the condition is. Apparently, it’s something called a ‘pilonidal cyst’ (aka pilonidal disease, dimple, sinus, etc.) In short, it’s a pocket of skin, sort of like a hole that goes into the body (hence the ‘sinus’ name.) Read More → ^ TOP

Script Kiddies

category: General
Is it illegal to walk up to a house and start fiddling with the locked door to try to get in? If I’m not mistaken, it is. For the same reasons, then, it should be illegal for people to continuously spam servers with user names and passwords, in an attempt to break in. Perhaps it already is illegal. If so, it should be enforced a little more often. Our server gets on the order of 150 such attempts a day. The Idiot-in-Chief prize goes to some fellow connecting from www.mativ.com (which doesn't resolve to anything, by the way) with 2,814 attempts to log into root in a 24-hour period.

A close encounter of the first kind with the law would teach a good lesson to all those idiot script kiddies. It might even scare them enough into getting a decent occupation and actually make a worthwhile contribution to the human species, instead of wasting bandwidth and processing time the world over.

They’re not even real hackers. They’re the scum at the bottom of the pond, not smart enough to do their own work: at least virus authors can be credited with a modicum of intelligence for getting through the layers of protection on PCs. These script kiddies are pathetic wannabes who think themselves "l33t" because they can download and run automated tools. Congratulations, bozo; you’re computer literate. Now run along and do us all (and most especially, yourself) a favor: do your homework and get a life instead. ^ TOP
